Born 1925 - English linguist.

Studied Modern Chinese Language and Literature at London University before living in China for three years and returning to take a PhD in Chinese Linguistics at Cambridge. Worked on the semantics and grammar of modern English and developed an internationally influential grammar model, the systemic functional grammar.
