Hanley is an interesting old mining town, which is one of six that combined make Stoke On Trent, positioned in the county of Staffordshire. It was established as far back as the 13th Century and started out as a small village, since those humble beginnings it has expanded and thrived becoming the hub of the Potteries. It was granted its market charter in 1776 which continues today with the bustling weekly market that's found in Fountain Square. There is a definite vibrant feel when the sun goes down where a stroll around the town will uncover a choice of bars, welcoming pubs, excellent restaurants with tempting menus, and popular night clubs. Visitors to the town have an impressive choice of shopping at the Potteries Shopping Centre, whilst walkers will enjoy the magnificent park which although was once the sight of mining spoil heaps, now however has been returned back to nature. With the busy mining and pottery industries taking hold the problem of the transportation of raw materials, and finished items was solved with the building of the Caldon Canal which courses through the park, although today visitors will discover that the canal plays host to colourful narrow boats which finishes the picturesque scene.
