Charles Stewart was in his own words 'that obsessed and demented being a Collector'. Driven by what he called 'Holy Greed', he searched through market stalls, friends' attics and forgotten trunks for interesting items of clothing. Many of the costumes and accessories from his extensive collection can now be seen on display at Shambellie House.

The house was designed by the Scottish architect David Bryce and built in 1856 for the Stewart family. In 1977 Charles Stewart, the great grandson of the original owner, donated the house and his unique costume collection to the National Museums of Scotland.
