Herefordshire Reports

Whitney-on-Wye, Herefordshire

Review of Whitney-on-Wye by angela dunphy on June 30th, 2009
When i was young i lived in the gamekeepers cottage then called (nursery cottage) it was on the estate. Captain Hope owned Whitney Court at that time and my father was one of his gamekeepers. one of the nicest places i remember is the walk home from school up the hill and past Whitney Court, and along a beautifull tree and Rhodedendron lined avenue. There was a gate at the bottom of a hill down the avenue and our house was up the hill surrounded by woodland. One day we celebrated Mothers day, I hadn't got any flowers for my mum so I helped myself to some from grassland nearby. I later learnt that Captain Hope had been ammused to see me helping myself to flowers in the grounds of his home! I had a lovely childhood living in Whitney on wye but it was brought short by my parents splitting up. I have lived in the city of York since then, but i will never forget the village its school, and the local rail station, which was used by my mother to travel to Hay on Wye for shopping. There was no Catholic church in Whitney and I used to go with Edith Stanton (from the toll bridge) in a car to Hay on Wye for my religeous education with a lady called Mrs Biddle. I wonder if Nursery cottage is still in exsistence, and if so does the local gamekeeper still live there?
