Born 1802. Died 1875 - English physicist.


Became known through work in acoustics. Invented the concertina in 1829. With William Cooke took out patent for electric telegraph. Built first printing telegraph in 1841 and devised single needle instrument in 1845. Invented sound magnifier, introduced the term microphone. Knighted in 1868.
