Read English at Magdalen College, Oxford. First book He that plays the King (1950). Drama critic until he became literary manager of National Theatre, London (1963-69). Editor in television and films Opponent of censorship. Collected reviews published as Curtains (1961) and Tynan Right and Left (1967).
