Born 1929 - Reykjavik, Iceland. Died 2007 - Scottish journalist and broadcaster.

Entered journalism in 1953 with Scottish Daily Express. Best known as quizmaster of television series Mastermind (1972-97). Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage (1992-96). Publications include Introducing Archaeology (1972), Treasures of Scotland (1981) and Scotland: The Story of A Nation (2000). Awarded honorary knighthood in 1989.
