Educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. First novel The Passionate Elopement (1911). Director of Aegean Intelligence Service during WWI, described in Extremes Meet (1928). Founded record magazine, The Gramophone in 1923. Works included Sylvia Scarlett (1918), Aegean Memories (1940), Whiskey Galore (1947) and Rockets Galore (1957).
