Born into a Romani family, Rodney ‘Gypsy’ Smith became a committed Christian convert aged 16. An early member of the Salvation Army (indeed of the group under its original name of the Christian Mission) he was spotted by William Booth and invited to become an evangelist, work he did on a small scale initially, later to very large gatherings. Having contrary to the Army’s rules accepted gifts from their congregation he and his wife were dismissed from that work, but became independent evangelists in the UK, USA, South Africa, and during WWI in France.
