In his capacity as servant to Scottish explorer Hugh Clapperton Lander travelled in 1825 to what is now Nigeria, and when Clapperton died there it fell on his return in 1828 to publish an account of their findings. He made a government funded exploration of the Niger and Benue rivers in 1830 with his brother John, and a third to the same area, funded by Liverpool merchants, in 1832. He died on that journey of a musket wound after a clash with local tribesmen.
