William Jevons

Born on 1st of September 1835
Died on 13rd of August 1882

Jevonsí original field of study was the natural sciences, his knowledge of chemistry and specifically of metallurgy gaining him work as an assayer at the Sydney mint for five years, interrupting his UCL course. Returning to the UK he resumed undergraduate and subsequently masterís studies, his new interests being economics and philosophy. A lectureship in Manchester was followed by a chair at UCL. He is most celebrated for his work on the theory of utility, but was a logician of great significance in his time, and a gifted mathematician. Aged just 46 he drowned while bathing off Hastings.
