Born 1849. Died 1903 - Poet, playwright and critic.

Suffered from tuberculosis as a child and had a leg amputated. Close friend of Robert Louis Stevenson and is thought to have been the inspiration for Long John Silver. Also collaborated on four plays including Deacon Brodie (1880) and Macaire (1885). His volumes of poetry included The Song of the Sword (1892) and Hawthorn and Lavender (1901). Edited the Magazine of Art and the Scots Observer. Joint Compiler of a dictionary of slang. Another close friend was JM Barrie and Henley's daughter Margaret is thought to have been the inspiration for Wendy in Peter Pan.
