Dunkeld is a small town in Strathtay, Perth and Kinross, Scotland, 15 miles north of Perth parallel with the River Tay on the north side surrounded by crags and woodland. It was the 9th century capital of Scotland.
The ancient town said to have been founded by the son of the King of the Picts c820 and hosts historically interesting structures, Dunkeld was destroyed at the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689, musket ball strikes can still be seen in the walls of the gothic style medieval Dunkeld Cathedral, the town was rebuilt by the 18th century in traditional Scottish style, consisting of a main street with narrow closes. A stone bridge was built in 1809 which changed the alignment of the town. The neo-gothic Atholl Memorial Fountain was built in 1866 and is found at The Cross or market place.
Cathedral Museum in the former chapter house contains elaborate monuments from 17th and early 19th centuries including two early Christian cross-slabs.
National Trust for Scotland has restored many of the buildings including The Hermitage an 18th century folley.
Dunkeld is a popular tourist resort, with picturesque scenery, fishing, holiday accommodation and railway station on the Highland Main Line; attractions include the Scottish Liqueur Centre.
