This North Somerset village can trace its history back beyond Roman times and may have been inhabited when a nearby Iron Age hill fort was constructed on Cadbury Hill. The remains of a Roman villa, a temple and a coin horde have been excavated in the area suggesting its development continued throughout the Roman occupation. The village is graced by a large Anglican church, St. Mary's. Built in the 14th century it is often called the Cathedral of the Moors because of the way it dwarfs the village. In the 19th century the railways came to Yatton in the shape of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway. One of the former branch lines, connecting the classically designed Victorian station to Cheddar and known as the Strawberry Line due it once being used to ship strawberries out of the Mendips, is now a cycle route and footpath. In recent times the village has grown in size and now boasts several pubs, churches and its own shopping arcade called Page's Court which is still known locally as 'The Precinct'. The village is surrounded by open countryside and local environmental groups are trying to conserve it by purchasing land and turning them into nature reserves.
