Salcombe is a small town on the Southern most coast of Devon. It is surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside and offers stunning coastal views and walks along the cliffs. Though the residential population has dwindled in recent years, Salcombe has become an extremely popular holiday resort with many holiday homes in and around the town. It is also popular among retirees. Another appeal is Salcombe’s mild, near Mediterranean climate which provides a habitat for many birds and plants along the estuary, some of which seldom seen in the UK if at all. These include dolphins and basking sharks. Salcombe is said to offer the best sailing in the UK with sheltered waters and diving points. The Island Cruising Club on Island Street provides sailing tuition and holidays. Salcombe’s history has been one of fishing, seafaring, boat and ship building. Stone Age settlement remains were found close by Salcombe and the recent find of a shipwreck tells of cross channel trade as far back as 3500 years. For those who enjoy a bit of retail therapy, Fore Street is lined with shops from the basic essentials to the brand names. And while you’re there, sample some of Salcombe Dairy’s delicious locally produced ice-cream. South of the town are two excellent beaches, South and North Sands, with cafes and boat hire available. The beaches are accessed by road or passenger ferry. On the cliff top above the beaches sits Overbecks House and Garden. In the Summer months the sub-tropical climate of the garden makes for an abundance of rich colourful sights and scents not usually found in an English garden. The house is Salcombe youth hostel, with part open to the public in the shape of a cafe and museum. Accommodation ranges from campsites and B&Bs, to family run and luxury hotels.
