Goosnargh is a town in Lancashire in the North Wets of England whose name first appeared as Goose Green in Viking times, then again it could have been an old Irish name “Gosan or Gusan” and which refers to pastureland. In either event it is recent history which has done much to improve this village located close to the Trough of Bowland and Pendle Hill. The two old pubs in the town were coaching inns for travellers from Yorkshire to the coast of Lancashire and later the town would be a drivers nightmare with traffic trying to get to Blackpool – traffic jams through the centre of the town were a regular occurrence. The coming of the A6 by pass rescued Goosnargh from this heavy traffic flow and today it offers the visitor and resident an oasis of calm from modern times. The medieval parish church of St Mary the Virgin, whilst Chingle Hall located on the outskirts if the village is reputedly the oldest, most haunted inhabited building in England today. If you happen to be visiting Goosnargh then you have to sample the local delicacy – Goosnargh Cakes which are made from a secret recipe – they look and taste like shortbread but with an exotic flavours.
