Whitechapel, in London's East End, is a colourful and traditionally working-class area that has risen above the grinding poverty its residents suffered in the 1800s and the bombing campaigns it endured during The Blitz. With plans in progress for improved transport links, Whitechapel looks forward to a full-scale regeneration in the not-too-distant future. For the moment, its history is preserved in buildings and museums, and in the cobbled alleyways and backstreets once stalked by Jack The Ripper. Visitors may retrace his footsteps by taking part in local Ripper walking tours. An equally famous Whitechapel resident was The Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick, whose story is told at the Royal London Hospital Archives & Museum. Other places of historical interest include the Women's Library, housed within a former public wash house, Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which is Britain's oldest manufacturing company, and Dennis Severs House - a "time capsule" created by artist Severs. The area has long associations with art, with the esteemed, 100-year-old Whitechapel Art Gallery now undergoing expansion. The Spitz Gallery stages exhibitions of photojournalism. One of Whitechapel's most popular attractions is Petticoat Lane market, with more than 1,000 stalls. It's also close to Brick Lane and Old Spitalfields markets.
