The most northerly stops on the Piccadilly Line of the underground system are in the London Borough of Enfield. There is a population of around 300,000 in this mostly residential suburb. It is also home to 3 campuses of Middlesex University, one of which is in Trent Park (one of the largest of several parks). Enfield was originally a small market town, on the edge of a forest and is still very green (being on the London Green Belt), ideal for the plentiful golf courses. Roman Enfield was connected to London by Ermine Street, which went all the way up to York. In the 1900s artefacts found confirmed the existence of Roman settlements in what are now Edmonton & Bush Hill Park. The current borough was formed in 1965 & still holds a weekly market as decreed in a charter by Edward I in the 13th century. Famous people from the area include Benjamin Disraeli, Bruce Forsyth, Paul McKenna and Amy Winehouse, amongst a number of others. Another claim to fame here is that Barclays Bank was the first place in the world to have an ATM in 1967. Transport here is excellent with numerous bus services, the main highways of the North Circular, A10 and M25 running through or close-by and of course the tube for fast links into central London. Accommodation is also abundant as is to be expected, as is entertainment with a multiplex cinema, shopping facilities, many garden centres (Crews Hill) and Lea Valley Park offering all countryside pursuits.
