If Dersingham, situated just off the A149 to the north of Castle Rising, is taken with Sandringham and Ingoldisthorpe as the three seemingly inevitably run together along the B1440 then it is more of a town than a village with facilities to match, though it does manage to retain its own village character. Part of that character undoubtedly comes from the lovely Norman church of St Nicholas, patron saint of fishermen – when the church was built the sea was a lot closer than the still easy two-mile trip nowadays. Typical of North Norfolk Norman ecclesiastical architecture St Nicholas definitely gives the place ‘tone’. Not that any more tone is required, given the royal estate at Sandringham abuts the village. Between Dersingham and that estate (and in fact belonging to the latter) sits a marvellous piece of wilderness area, Dersingham Bog. It may sound rather unattractive but is far from it, a mix of woodland, heath and wetland habitats that are home to some fascinating birdlife including the Redpoll and the Woodlark, and smaller in scale but almost magically charming the glow-worm. Within very easy reach of Dersingham are Castle Rising with its wonderful Norman keep; the port of King’s Lynn which remains packed with historic architectural gems; and of course the beaches of North Norfolk stretching from nearby Hunstanton all the way across the coast to Cromer.
