Watlington is a market town and civil parish in the county of Oxfordshire, located in the Chiltern Hills halfway between Oxford and Reading. The famous walking route, the Icknield Way, skirts the town to the east. The Watlington White Mark was originally designed by local squire Edward Horner, who felt that the town’s Norman church of St Leonard, when viewed from his home, would appear more impressive if it looked as though it had a spire. This unusual chalk folly 270 feet tall and 36 feet wide was cut into Watlington Hill in 1764. The other striking feature of Watlington is its Town Hall, built in 1665 to serve originally as a boys' grammar school. The town's three main trading streets of High Street, Couching Street and Shirburn Street meet at the Town Hall, and Watlington boasts a mix of independent retailers selling a selection of goods and services. There are also numerous places to eat and drink in Watlington. Watlington is recognized for the fact that the former Great Western Railway branchline from Watlington to Princes Risborough is actually located a mile away from Watlington at Pyrton! Red kites, re-introduced to the Chilterns from Spain in 1989, can be spotted in the area.
