Malcolm McLaren

Malcolm McLaren changed British fashion and music. He probably still holds the record for number of art schools attended without graduating, a sign of his magpie future. He and Vivienne Westwood turned punk into high and low fashion in the 70s from their King’s Road Shop, Sex; and his controversial management made punk’s first superstars of The Sex Pistols. They were young, energetic, anarchic, raw, and interesting – everything Pomp Rock was not, and McLaren seemed to use the Pistols as his weapon against bands who thought 20 minute drum solos were clever. He later worked with Adam Ant and Bow Wow Wow; dabbled in art and opera and anything that took his fancy, always finding an angle, a twist. It would have been fascinating had he carried out his year 2000 threat to stand for London Mayor.
