David Walliams

Computer says bloody well done. David Walliams, struggling with what for the squeamish we’ll refer to as an upset tummy, along with hypothermia and the sometimes powerful currents of the Thames, has completed his marathon 140-mile charity-swim and in doing so raised more than £1 million for Sport Relief. Not someone whom you’d look at – especially if in bad drag – and identify as a sporting hero. He nonetheless obviously is, and if he doesn’t feature in the shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year this year – inexplicably not listed in 2006 after his Channel swim - there will be grumblings. He has an intriguing personality – humorous, intense and fey seemingly at whim, subject to depression and flights of energetic fancy – and has achieved something meaningful with his sport. Personality. Sport. Come on Little Britain, when the time comes get voting: we want that one.
