Holidays from a disabled perspective, Issues for the Disabled

WHEN YOUR’E ON HOLIDAY

Can you enjoy a pint in the pub advertised in the paper?

Can you go to the cinema; the one in the High Street?

Can you visit the art gallery; the one listed in the directory?

Can you shop at the grocer’s advertised in that leaflet?

Can you get cigarettes at the tobacconist’s shown on TV?

Can you visit the hairdresser’s; the one in the yellow pages?

NOW TRY IT IN A WHEELCHAIR.

READ ON!

Since the Disability Discrimination Act became law many providers
of goods and services have made their premises accessible to disabled
people; unfortunately, many others have not.

A disabled person seeking a particular service must prepare a list of
appropriate providers then make enquiries, hoping to find one whose
premises are accessible. Such enquiries are time consuming and often
fruitless because many premises still present obstacles.

It has been suggested that all providers should be required to advertise
the accessibility of their services so that people suffering from a
particular disability can determine, without visiting the premises
concerned, whether the service is likely to be accessible to them.
This proposal is called ’For All to See’ i.e. 4All2C

It is now proposed to ask central government to appoint a task
force to resolve the key issues that will eventually enable 4All2C to
be used to augment the existing Disability Discrimination Act.

proposal are invited to contact Alan Tooth at:
